Did the NC DMV Text You About an Unpaid Fine? Don't Click That Link.

A lot of North Carolina drivers have been receiving text messages that appear to be from the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The texts typically claim you have an unpaid traffic ticket and warn that if you don't pay immediately, your license could be suspended, your registration revoked, and legal action taken against you.
It sounds serious. But it's a scam.
The NCDMV does not send text messages requesting payment — not for tickets, not for fines, not for tolls. North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson has issued formal warnings about this scheme, noting that his office has seen a significant surge in complaints from residents across the state. The messages are sophisticated enough to fool even cautious people, using official-sounding language and links that appear to end in ".gov" but don't.
If you receive one of these texts, don't click anything. Forward it to 7726 to report it as spam, and file a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
